Jorge Cantallops, Chairman of the Seminar “Exploration Market andMining in Chile: Prospects and Future Challenges” and Head of Studies and Public Policy at Cochilco
“Mineral exploration is essentialfor sustainable development of mining and to give it the role and importance at the EXPOMIN 2016 Conference is vital”
The Chairman of the Seminar “Exploration Market and Mining in Chile: Prospects and Future Challenges” at the EXPOMIN 2016 International Conference, and Head of Studies and Public Policy at the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco), Jorge Cantallop, talked about the importance of mineral exploration to the sustainable development of the sector and the need to open a debate to discuss on the state of public policies for the promotion of Greenfield exploration, among others.
1. What are the main challenges to be addressed by the seminar you lead?
Taking into account that mineral exploration is a fundamental stage for the sustainable development of the mining business, it is vital to give it the role and importance that corresponds in such an important event as the EXPOMIN Conference.
Mineral exploration is different from operation itself, both in its production process as in its reaction to metal price cycles. In this regard, we are looking forward to sharing experiences about strategies of major companies concerning the financing of brownfield exploration in times of low prices and of junior companies for Greenfield projects, since everybody know that one of the first cutbacks in times of low prices are made in exploration budgets.
There fore, the idea is to exchange experiences, for example, concerning new technologies, incorporation of ITor best practices in project management.
2. As a Chairman of the event, what are your expectations regarding the seminar? Do you believe that the seminar will allow to make a thorough analysis of the industry?
Considering that this is the first version, we hope to generate discussion about the state of public policies for the promotion of Greenfield exploration (basic geological information, mobility of the mining property or tax incentives, among others) and, also open a space for better link between the mining industry and the financial market, by pointing out the recent launch of Santiago Stock Exchange, Venture market and its potential for financing junior companies in Chile and think why not? Chile as a financial platform for exploration in other countries.
3. What is the level of progress in relation to the seminar subjects, specialists invited and approach?
We have been in touch with several potential speakers from junior and major companies and with suppliers of equipment and technologies for the exploration industry. We hope to confirm the final schedule in the coming weeks. We are also looking forward to having the presence of people who perform geothermal exploration and presenting recent announcements regarding the tender on lithium.
4. What do you think about including these topics in the seminar of the EXPOMIN 2016 Conference?
This first version coincides with a low periodin the mining and exploration activity in the world, so the challenge is double because we hope exploration becomes a standing item on EXPOMIN seminars.
Furthermore, I believe that it is essential to be aware of the importanceof the exploration stage for the sustainable development of the activity and the efficient use of our natural resources and the role it can play in generating virtuous linkages to the country’s economy.
